BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A tri-athlete is sharing his story about living life despite regular dialysis.

37-year-old Shad Ireland was a guest of the National Kidney Foundation serving Western New York.

When he was a young man, Ireland saw a tri-athalon on TV and was inspired to train.

He was the first dialysis patient to complete the grueling competition.

“Somebody sitting on the couch, hopefully one of your viewers, is looking at this and they say, ‘you know, geez if he can be on kidney dialysis for 27 years and do an ironman, which is a 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and then a 26-mile run, maybe they can get up and do some exercise’, and that’s really one of the big components of preventing the cause of kidney disease,” Shad exclaimed.

In Western New York, 1,600 people are on dialysis, and 500 are waiting for transplants.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center nephrologist Brian Remillard MD and critical care nurse Anne Mrozik RN have been performing kidney dialysis and working to establish a dialysis center at a Partners in Health (PIH) clinic in Hinche, located on Haitis Central Plateau. Remillard and Mrozik are also teaching wound care and conducting training classes on the dialysis equipment with the local Haitian staff to ensure sustainability.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of DHMC, Partners in Health, and Dartmouth College, and the donation of the dialysis equipment by NXStage, more patients lives are being saved.

Up to now, patients who need dialysis treatment have been assessed and treated by nephrologists in the specialist health service. Over time, several local health care institutions have introduced teledialysis. This means that patients can receive treatment in their local environment combined with the close follow-up that they need from a nephrologist. IP-based communication is used in the transfer of medical and technical measurements from the dialysis machines in parallel with videoconferencing. This is a movie made by Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine in 2001.

I shot this video on a trip to Washington DC in March 2008. I forgot my drain line for the NxStage System One and had to rig a solution. I could have had drain lines sent but I expected a fellow NxStager to bring me a couple of her drain lines from home when she arrived today. Unfortunately these didn’t make it on the plane so I am back to the solution I came up with last night. For additional information on my experience with NxStage travel check out my blog at www.billpeckham.com

Here is a short video of the Grand Waltz that I chartered in the summer of 2007. The video shows the boat and my NxStage set up foor my second night of dialysis. For more information about the healthier option of dialyzing more frequently and the option of using a transportable hemodialysis machine in your own home, or on vacation check out the non-profit Medical Education Institute web site Home Dialysis Central here: http://www.homedialysis.org/ . People who are using dialysis to replace their kidney function will find a lot of informaiton and the opportuinity to connect with others taking advantage of healthier dialysis options (healthier than three day a week in-center dialysis) in the forum section of the web site here: http://forums.homedialysis.org/ THe forum section also has a discussion (a thread) of this trip here:http://forums.homedialysis.org/showthread.php?t=1550
